The arts are more than just entertainment — they are powerful tools that help young people discover confidence, creativity, healing, purpose, and self-expression. For many children, especially underrepresented youth, access to performing arts programs and safe after-school spaces can completely change the direction of their lives.
After school hours are some of the most important times in a young person’s day. Without positive outlets, mentorship, and opportunities, many youths are left without safe spaces to grow, create, or express themselves. Unfortunately, underrepresented communities often face limited access to affordable arts programs, creative spaces, mentorship opportunities, and extracurricular activities. This lack of opportunity can leave many young people feeling disconnected, unsupported, unheard, or without direction.
The arts give youth an outlet to express emotions, release stress, process life experiences, and discover talents they may not have realized they had. Through dance, music, drama, writing, production, visual arts, and creative expression, young people can build confidence, communication skills, leadership abilities, teamwork, and emotional wellness. The arts create spaces where youth feel seen, valued, encouraged, and inspired.
The arts also play an important role in academic success. Creative programs help improve focus, discipline, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and self-confidence. Students involved in the arts often become more engaged in school because they feel motivated, supported, and connected to positive activities that encourage personal growth and self-expression. The arts teach youth how to think creatively, work collaboratively, and express ideas in meaningful ways that can positively impact both school performance and future opportunities.
Not every child learns or expresses themselves the same way. Some youth may struggle academically, socially, emotionally, or mentally, but the arts often give them a place where they can shine. One performance, one song, one art project, or one supportive mentor can inspire a child to believe in themselves in ways they never have before.
Cities such as New York City have shown the positive impact that after-school and arts enrichment programs can have on youth and communities. Research and community programs have demonstrated that quality after-school programs can improve academic performance, emotional wellness, confidence, leadership skills, and community involvement for young people. These programs also provide safe spaces where youth can express themselves creatively while receiving mentorship, encouragement, and support.
After-school arts centers also positively impact families and communities. They provide safe and productive environments for youth during critical after-school hours while helping build stronger relationships, mentorship, and community engagement. These programs can reduce isolation, encourage positive friendships, increase youth involvement, and create opportunities for young people to stay connected to something meaningful and uplifting.
Arts centers can also create positive economic and workforce opportunities within the community. Programs like dance, music, theater, production, visual arts, digital arts, and creative workshops help create opportunities for teachers, mentors, artists, performers, instructors, production staff, and community creatives to share their talents while creating jobs and strengthening local arts culture.
In addition to youth programming, community arts centers can provide workshops and creative opportunities for adults as well. Adult workshops in music, dance, writing, theater, visual arts, and creative wellness can help community members discover new skills, relieve stress, connect socially, and explore creativity in positive and meaningful ways. The arts can become a tool for healing, connection, self-expression, and lifelong learning for people of all ages.
Communities thrive when young people and families are given opportunities to grow creatively, emotionally, socially, and professionally. Investing in youth arts programs is not only investing in creativity — it is investing in leadership, mental wellness, education, workforce development, culture, confidence, and the future of the community itself.
At The Lillie Mae Parson Performing Arts Center, our mission is to create safe and empowering spaces where youth can explore their creativity, express themselves freely, build confidence, and discover purpose through the arts. We believe every child deserves access to opportunities that inspire them to dream bigger, believe in themselves, and feel connected to a supportive community. 💜🎶✨
