Building Myself While Building LMP

There was a time in my life when I had to stop working and truly focus on healing my body, mind, and spirit. It was one of the hardest seasons I have ever faced because I have always been passionate about helping others, building my vision, and creating opportunities for youth through The Lillie Mae Parson Performing Arts Center. But during that season, I learned something powerful — healing is necessary, and creativity can become part of that healing journey.

Music and writing became safe spaces for me during difficult moments. They gave me a way to process emotions, release stress, reflect, and reconnect with myself. Through music, I found comfort, peace, inspiration, and emotional release. Through writing, I found clarity, expression, and healing. The arts helped me feel alive again when I felt mentally and emotionally exhausted.

There is always a song that helps you get through the ups and downs we face in life. For me, that song was Power of a Woman by Ella Mai. Even though it is a love song, there was something about the beat, the melody, and the energy behind it that gave me strength. It reminded me that I could heal and accomplish anything in this world. It gave me the motivation I needed to continue becoming a stronger woman, mother, leader, and visionary.

Even though the lyrics may have been written from the perspective of being a stronger wife or girlfriend, my spirit heard something different. My body and soul heard: “You got this. Don’t give up. Focus on healing. Build your life and build LMP stronger.” That message stayed with me during moments when I needed encouragement the most.

This experience deepened my understanding of the healing power of the arts. Creative expression is more than entertainment — it can help people cope with pain, trauma, anxiety, loneliness, and life challenges. The arts give people a voice when words are difficult to speak. They build confidence, emotional connection, self-expression, and hope.

That is one of the reasons why the mission of LMP means so much to me. I understand firsthand how creativity, music, writing, dance, and artistic expression can positively impact mental and emotional wellness. I want young people to have safe spaces where they can express themselves, feel supported, discover their gifts, and heal through creativity and community.

My healing journey reminded me that art has the power to inspire, restore, uplift, and transform lives — and that is the kind of impact I hope LMP continues to create for others. 💜
